Announced this week for distinguished musical composition by an American that has had its first performance or recording in the United States during the past year, Ten thousand dollars ($10,000). The award has gone to Julia Wolfe, for her work Anthracite Fields, premiered on April 26, 2014, in Philadelphia by the Bang on a Can All-Stars and the Mendelssohn Club Chorus.
The work is described as a powerful oratorio for chorus and sextet evoking Pennsylvania coal-mining life around the turn of the 20th Century. Published by Red Poppy Music/G. Schirmer, Inc.
